"Seductions" Now a 99 Cent eBook

Gary Scott Beatty's "Seductions," a bizarre psychological thriller that explores mating ritual psychology, seduction history, the barroom scene and vampires, is now a 99 cent eBook at Aazurn.com.

"This is not your mom's, or your daughter's, romance story," laughed Beatty. "This 'hero' is not a nice guy at all, but we still feel for him as the world changes around him and only two things remain: his desire for blood and a yearning for lost love."

The eBook is 91 pages, optimized for easy reading on Kindle, iPhone, iPad, Nook, Android platforms and more. "I set it up to minimize the zooming and scrolling around typical of other ecomics."

"Seductions" is a love story with BITE, recommended for mature readers, featuring pencil art by "Oz," "Dark Oz" and "Land of Oz" artist Bill Bryan and unique computer-over-pencils coloring by Beatty.

"It was fun bar hopping through the decades, looking at how the relationships between the sexes change, then writing a lone vampire into the mix," said the Xeric-awarded author.

"Just imagine yourself in the dating scene, asking yourself the question -- heart's desire or dinner?"

300 Face Two Million, Living and Dead, in Indie Comics HORROR #1

Xerxes called his guard "The Immortals" for a reason. An army that needs no food or water can march endlessly. So begins Rob Anderson's zombie tale Immortal Resistance in Indie Comics HORROR #1, in September's Previews, Diamond's comic book preorder catalog, under Aazurn Publishing.

Anderson knows zombies. His "Rex, Zombie Killer" from Big Dog Ink, released earlier this year, is still receiving reviewer praise, from Fangoria to Newsarama to Ain't It Cool News. Kurt Anthony Krug of Comic Buyer's Guide wrote "Rex" is "solid and fast-paced, with good character development and funny moments thrown in."

When not writing comics, Anderson is General Manager of Andy Schmidt's Comics Experience and moderator/administrator of the Comic Creators Workshop online community. He was also a member of The Brutal Circle writer’s group. Rob founded Panda Dog Press in 2009. Mutant pets menace Animal Control in Anderson's upcoming Animal Control: Special Creatures Unit miniseries.

Immortal Resistance is illustrated by Dafu Yu. Explore Anderson's projects at PandaDogPress.com.

Six complete stories of dread shamble through Indie Comics HORROR #1, the best fear from independent comic book creators. "Rob's Immortal Resistance wraps up in eight pages what it would take other comics a full issue to do," said Aazurn Publishing Publisher/Editor Gary Scott Beatty. "We like complete stories, well told!"

Information about creators and a video preview of Indie Comics HORROR #1, with music by the appropriately indie Chantron, is online at IndieComicsMagazine.com.

With no huge overprint, no digital version and no back issue sales, Indie Comics HORROR is available ONLY at your local and online comic book shops. It is best to preorder from September's Previews, said Beatty. Some Indie Comics Magazine issues, like last year's Christmas issue, are now hard to find.

Treachery and Gunplay in Indie Comics HORROR #1

You ditch your wife for a lover and all hell breaks loose! Guns blazing, The Standard appears in Indie Comics HORROR #1, in September's Previews, Diamond's comic book preorder catalog, under Aazurn Publishing.

"Horror takes many forms and I couldn't resist this story from Glenn Møane for our first issue," said Aazurn Publishing Publisher/Editor Gary Scott Beatty. "Hitchcock-like suspense, with twists and misdirection, is hard to pull off in an eight page short story. Møane delivers!"

"Struggling Norwegian writer" Glenn Møane has released “American Sinner” with Edson Alves, “The Gathering” with Enric Simon (in Food Chain Anthology #1), and “Homecoming” with Marco Santiago. "The Standard" was published in a digital anthology through Diablo Comics Presents and graphic novel “Partners” (illustrated by Elias Martins) will soon be published by MoonShot Digital Comics.

In The Standard, artist Adrian Rodriguez portrays suburban life, gunplay and treachery with a cinematic, unfaltering eye for detail.

Møane is currently working on a webcomic project called "Lazarus Standing." A number of his noir tales dealing with crime, cynicism, and people motivated by greed and sex will be collected in an anthology with art from illustrators as diverse as Henderson and Desperado's Predrag Ivanovic. Keep up with the writer at glennmoane.blogspot.com.

Scream in Space: Indie Comics HORROR #1

A space vacation sounds like a lovely time, unless it's in Indie Comics HORROR #1, in September's Previews, Diamond's comic book preorder catalog, under Aazurn Publishing. The Belt, written by Joe Sergi and illustrated by Dafu Yu, explores a tragic honeymoon.
Writer Joe Sergi is a newcomer, but no stranger to critical acclaim. Sergi's first novel, Sky Girl and the Superheroic Legacy, was released from iEnovel in 2010. That same year, Joe received the Haller Award for Best Writer from the Comicbook Artist Guild at New York ComicCon. He was selected as a semi-finalist in the Who Wants to Create a Superheroine contest sponsored by the Shadowline Imprint of Image Comics. Sergi writes short stories and articles in the horror, science fiction, and superhero genres. For comics, he has written romance, superhero, science fiction, and horror tales. Worm Cheese on the Menu for Indie Comics HORROR #1

When a shadowy customer makes a strange request, especially in a horror magazine, walk away. Quickly! Worm Cheese appears in Indie Comics HORROR #1, in September's Previews, Diamond's comic book preorder catalog, under Aazurn Publishing.

"We couldn't offer the first issue of a horror magazine without an ultimate gross-out story," said Aazurn Publishing Publisher/Editor Gary Scott Beatty. "Writers Terry Cronin and Pat Martin (Students of the Unusual) are the perfect choice!

Cronin is also the author of The Skinvestigator novels featuring dermatologist detective Harry Poe, available at B&N and Amazon. Martin, noted raconteur and bon vivant, is director of the horror film “Milk Maids” and co-author of the WhatArePatandBillyDrinking cocktail blog.

Worm Cheese pairs them with Joel Rivers, the Xeric-awarded creator of the western horror graphic novel “Along The Canadian” who works as a freelance illustrator and with his brothers-in-arms at the full concept house, Out For Justice, at OutforJustice.org.

Terry joined forces with Pat Martin, Jeff Hall and Bob Lizek to create 3 Boys Productions, responsible for the annual Melbourne Independent Filmmakers Festival. The team is now producing Adventure Chefs, a reality show where contestants hunt, forage and gather food to prepare fine dining for judges.

"One of Terry's talents is finding new, talented illustrators to work with," said Beatty. "Joel Rivers' expressions really push the story forward with humor and I love his chaotic panels borders. You can almost smell the rankness of the cheese."

Witch Hunters Face the Unknown in Indie Comics HORROR #1

Be careful who you accuse of witchcraft! Australian Paul Bradford presents a moody story and three Hierophantom's Poeticorner tales in Indie Comics HORROR #1, in September's Previews, Diamond's comic book preorder catalog, under Aazurn Publishing.

"Allen Byrns' smoky, shadowy art is a real treat in Witch Hunters," said Aazurn Publishing Publisher/Editor Gary Scott Beatty. "Paul's work has appeared in our Indie Comics Magazine publications before to high acclaim and we're lucky to have him contribute horror to Indie Comics HORROR #1."

Bradford also gets gothic with Hierophantom's Poeticorner pages. Illustrated, gothic poetry has been a staple of horror since the late 1700s and Bradford lives up to the tradition with three pages of creepy verse.

Originally from Scotland, Bradford was brought up on the British comics that helped twist him into the writer he is today. Now living in Western Australia, he writes comics containing a broad spectrum of themes and ideas. He has produced small press “zines” through his company Inertia Publications at http://inertiapublications.blogspot.com/.

Aid for the Undead in Indie Comics HORROR #1

When facing the undead we may want to run away or pull a machete. A country minister takes another path in Indie Comics HORROR #1, in September's Previews, Diamond's comic book preorder catalog, under Aazurn Publishing.

"Chris Beckett and Dan Lauer offer a different kind of horror story, perfect for the first issue of our indie anthology," said Aazurn Publishing Publisher/Editor Gary Scott Beatty. "It's sad -- and creepy."

Hailing from Maine, C.M. Beckett, with friend and creative partner Dan Fleming, self-published four issues of the black and white, comics/prose anthology, "Warrior27," recently collected in a 254-page edition that includes new and never-before-published pieces.

Beckett has written for the Pulse, contributed to the flash fiction sites 50 Years From Now and Elephant Words, and has had his short stories published by Ape Entertainment, Dark Recesses Press, and Top Shelf Comics.

Indie Comics HORROR #1 Haunts September's Previews

The chilling first issue of Indie Comics HORROR assaults Diamond's comic book preorder catalog, Previews, in September, said Aazurn Publishing's Gary Scott Beatty.

"We're the publisher of Indie Comics Magazine and readers can expect that kind of variety," Beatty explained. "Zombie warriors, noir crime, moody gothic, manic gross out -- it's all here in stories well told."

The #1 issue features a disgusting zombie cover illustrated by Engine's Tim Tyler, with color by Beatty. "It was interesting adding color to Tim's super-detailed line work. Every pus-filled sore, every swollen abscess, every piece of ripped flesh needed attention."

Tim Tyler is a quarter century veteran of the independent comic book industry, having been inker, artist or publisher on Faust (inker over Tim Vigil), Razor, Blood Reign, Hades, Devil-Jack, Cuda, Dreadstar, Zero Tolerance, Djustine, Shinga's Talons, Dead Crew, Manga Monthly, and more. After attending the Joe Kubert School, Tyler was discovered by Mark (Hulk) Pannaccia and hired by Pyramid Comics.

Tyler's website features his Engine series, plus a Blood Reign and Devil-Jack team-up series. To see Tim's new, original web comics, art galleries and news updates, visit user.drunkduck.com/ttyler. Danger Angel merchandise is at comic-cosmos.com.

Six complete stories of dread shamble through Indie Comics HORROR #1, the best fear from independent comic book creators. "I like complete stories and there aren't many places to read them in comics," said Beatty. "Frankly, there aren't many comic book writers today who do well with short stories. These creators have perfected the form!"

Information about creators and a video preview of Indie Comics HORROR #1, with music by the appropriately indie Chantron, is online at IndieComicsMagazine.com.

Indie Comics HORROR #1 will cost only $4.75 for six complete stories. Like Indie Comics Magazine, there will be no huge overprint, no digital version and no back issue sales -- Indie Comics HORROR is available ONLY at your local and online comic book shops. It is best to preorder from September's Previews, said Beatty. Some Indie Comics Magazine issues, like last year's Christmas issue, are now hard to find.

"The Tyler cover is just the beginning. This is the kind of modern horror we like to read. We're out to alarm and repulse. Then we go for shock and disgust!"

At Andy Schmidt's Comics Experience workshop for comics creators, Kim met other talented storytellers who joined together to form Elevator Pitch Press.

Kim is working on several projects, including a TV pilot about a combat support hospital in a world devastated by a global pandemic, and a cyberpunk comic mini-series about the coming robot revolution. "I realize I have a thing for stories about worst-case scenarios," he said.

Arsenic Lullaby Variant Cover on Indie Comics Magazine's Spring Issue

A quirky variant cover from Arsenic Lullaby creator Douglas Paszkiewicz joins eight story pages from the Mad magazine contributor in Indie Comics Magazine's Spring Issue, for preorder in Diamond's April 2012 Previews under Aazurn Publishing.

The alternate cover from Paszkiewicz will receive limited distribution through comic shops, said Indie Comics Magazine Publisher Gary Scott Beatty. "As about it where you buy your comics. One in every four covers will feature Pasz's art."

Harvey and Eisner Award nominated Paszkiewicz will also feature eight pages of his popular Arsenic Lullaby creation in Indie Comics Magazine. From magician illegals to cholera cowboys, Paszkiewicz's work is regularly featured in several national publications including Mad Magazine and Too Much Coffee Man Magazine.

Paszkiewicz has been picked to be the featured creator in April's Indie Edge article in Previews.

"We can't get enough of Pasz's twisted comedy here," said Beatty. "This is the third time he will appear in Indie Comics Magazine. When his pages come in we pass them around the office and laugh our heads off."

Pasz himself suggested he draw a cover, said Beatty. "I suggested we offer it as an alternate, a collectible readers will have to ask for at their comic shop," Beatty explained. "That way, Pasz can let his imagination run free and dealers can still use the regular cover if someone objects!"

The 10 year collection Arsenic Lullaby: The Devil's Decade was recently released in hardcover and softcover, over 400 pages of dark humor and editorial commentary "reviewing all the crap that went on behind the scenes," wrote Paszkiewicz.

"Arsenic Lullaby is made up of humor that is too twisted for Mad magazine. Imagine that!" laughed Beatty. "There are a lot of comedy comics trying to be offbeat right now. Pasz's work is so unexpected, the twists so jarring and witty, he transcends current trends."

In Indie Comics Magazine, short biographies and contact information are included with done-in-one stories so readers can easily seek out more of the creators' work. Merchandise, blog, sketches, the Arsenic Lullaby animated pilot and more is at ArsenicLullabies.com.

Indie Comics Magazine's Spring Issue will feature eight complete stories, from creators as diverse as Terry Cronin (Students of the Unusual), Australia's Paul Bradford (Undercurrent) and Italian creator Maddalena Carrai (Creepy Gaga).

River Dragon Slithers Into Indie Comics Magazine's Spring Issue

Students of the Unusual's popular bum, Uncle Pat, weaves myth and history together in a story of a shaman, a priest, and their dragon nemesis' hunger for human sacrifice and treasure. The River Dragon appears in Indie Comics Magazine's Spring Issue, scheduled for preorder in Diamond's April 2012 Previews under Aazurn Publishing.

The Students of the Unusual comic series is filled with horror tales based on the legends of the beautiful state of Florida. The series is published by 3 Boys Productions, founded by Terry Cronin, Jeff Hall, Bob Lizek and Pat Martin.

The River Dragon's writer, Terry Cronin is a film producer/director/dermatologist who works with the team to produce the annual Melbourne Independent Filmmakers Festival. Cronin's new Skinvestigator prose books follow the murder investigations of dermatologist Doctor Harry Poe.

"Terry's unique spin on traditional horror is wildly entertaining," said Beatty. "In film, book or comic, Terry knows just how to let his stories reveal their twists." Art in the Indie Comics Magazine tale is supplied by Jorge Calamato.

3 Boys Productions is currently producing Adventure Chefs, a reality show where contestants hunt, forage and gather food to prepare fine dining for judges.

In Indie Comics Magazine, short biographies and contact information are included with done-in-one stories so readers can easily seek out more of the creators' work. Full color Student of the Unusual comics can be found at StudentsoftheUnusual.com.

Dream Honeymoon Turns Nightmare in Indie Comics Magazine's Spring Issue

Lost in the ruins of a structure once built to house the dreaded minotaur, a newlywed couple searches for their Dream Honeymoon in Indie Comics Magazine's Spring Issue, scheduled for preorder in Diamond's April 2012 Previews under Aazurn Publishing.

The story is written by Erica J. Heflin, editor and publisher at Felinix Publications, a source for independent comics. The webpage at http://www.readwebcomics.com is a place to experience webcomics "Of the Grave" and "Robomastyx" and a growing collection of minicomics.

Heflin's longer projects, "Of Wolf and Woman," "The Spirit of All" and more will soon see print. Through her active blog on http://www.readwebcomics.com, Heflin reviews independent titles "and links to kickstarter projects that have piqued our interest."

Erica's comic book education began with her work in a comic store. "Before I knew what was happening, I was reading every book on the shelf. In the 90s. Every book. That’s when I passed the point of no return, and became a lifelong comic book fan."

"While short story comic book writing seems to be disappearing from the mainstream press, publishers like Erica have embraced and mastered the form," said Indie Comics Magazine Publisher Gary Scott Beatty.

"As with all our stories, short biographies and contact information are included so readers can easily seek out more of the creators' work." Visit http://www.readwebcomics.com for more about Heflin and Felinix Publications.

Paul Bradford Introduces Undercurrent in Indie Comics Magazine's Spring Issue

A brazen, brutal knife attack occurs before your eyes on the streets of your city. What do you do? Australian Paul Bradford introduces his "Noir" inspired Undercurrent series of comic stories with The Good Samaritan in Indie Comics Magazine's Spring Issue, scheduled for preorder in Diamond's April 2012 Previews under Aazurn Publishing.

Originally from Scotland, Bradford was brought up on the British comics that helped twist him into the writer he is today. Now living in Western Australia, he writes comics containing a broad spectrum of themes and ideas. He also writes Gothic poetry under the pseudonym Hierophantom and has produced small press “zines” through his company Inertia Publications.

"Paul picked artist Randy Valiente and his stark, realistic, black shadow style is eerily beautiful for this kind of black-hearted story," said Indie Comics Magazine Publisher Gary Scott Beatty. "Undercurrent works really well in our format of done-in-one tales."

Undercurrent is Bradford's second story in Indie Comics Magazine. "Paul writes well in a variety of genres," said Beatty. "This dark tale in our Spring issue is a world away from his Astral Crusaders in last year's Indie Comics Magazine #3. Noir or war, Paul molds adventure and fear together superbly."

In Indie Comics Magazine, short biographies and contact information are included with done-in-one stories so readers can easily seek out more of the creators' work. For ongoing updates on all things relating to Bradford's comics visit his blog at InertiaPublications.blogspot.com.

The Spirit Stalker is On the Trail of Evil in Indie Comics Magazine's Spring Issue

It's night at a nearly empty western town, and Spirit Stalker Long-Stare Jepson is on the trail of the Horned Prince. It's Indie Comics Magazine's Spring Issue, scheduled for preorder in Diamond's April 2012 Previews under Aazurn Publishing, and blood will be spilled.

Dan Davis' Legend of the Spirit Stalker visits Indie Comics Magazine in a short story, fresh from his supernatural western tale graphic novel A Storm of Reckonings. The Stalker is both a shaman of Choctaw descent and a bounty hunter of the "supra-natural," whose sole duty is to defend his tribe and his world from evil men and spirits of darkness.

"Davis may be based in New York City now, but he was born in Texas and it shows," said Indie Comics Magazine Publisher Gary Scott Beatty. "He's not one of those city boys dreaming about the old west. You can tell Dan has spent some time in the saddle."

That doesn't mean Legend of the Spirit Stalker is a dusty, old fashioned western, said Beatty. "Davis does a great job of combining science fiction, fantasy, suspense, horror, and the old West into a new kind of adventure. The hero may be chasing the supernatural, but the story feels real and grounded, touched with comedy, until all hell breaks loose."

In Indie Comics Magazine, short biographies and contact information are included with done-in-one stories so readers can easily seek out more of the creators' work. Preview selections from the graphic novel and learn more about the Spirit Stalker screenplay at Spirit-Stalker.com.

Indie Comics Magazine's Spring Issue will feature eight complete stories, from creators as diverse as Terry Cronin (Students of the Unusual), Eisner and Harvey nominee Douglas Paszkiewicz (Mad magazine), Australia's Paul Bradford (Undercurrent) and Italian creator Maddalena Carrai (Creepy Gaga).

Maddalena Carrai's Creepy Gaga Comes to Indie Comics Magazine

Italian illustrator Maddalena Carrai features digs at pop culture icons in her Creepy Gaga series. Now readers can enjoy Pop Heroes, an attempt by dead god Morty, Amy and Gaga to become super heroes -- high heels, choreography and all -- in Indie Comics Magazine's Spring Issue, scheduled for preorder in Diamond's April 2012 Previews under Aazurn Publishing.

Carrai's Creepy Gaga series reflects her love of Impressionism and Expressionism, and her interest in mass media music perspectives, attitudes and images.

"Maddalena's work is different in a highly entertaining way," said Indie Comics Magazine Publisher Gary Scott Beatty. "She takes potshots at pop culture giants with these angular cartoons that just energize the page."

Carrai is a biotechnology student with a passion for drawing, art and pop culture. Self taught since the age of four, she is now studying comics and illustration at a studio in Florence, Italy.

"Maddalena is a young, fresh force in comics American audiences will want to notice," said Beatty. "We're lucky we're the publication introducing her here."

In Indie Comics Magazine, short biographies and contact information are included with done-in-one stories so readers can easily seek out more of the creators' work. Trash Music Awards, Behind the Scenes and Monster Ball Tour minis can be read at creepygaga.blogspot.com. Infantryman Origin in Indie Comics Magazine's Spring Issue

Kaso Comics' new adventurer Infantryman, wielding his blade as an adversary of evil, premieres in Indie Comics Magazine's Spring Issue, scheduled for preorder in Diamond's April 2012 Previews under Aazurn Publishing.

New York state based publisher Anthony Cacioppo and frequent collaborator Chuck Foulds will present Infantryman's origin story in Indie Comics Magazine, the first in-print appearance of the new character.

"This is the third time Kaso comic stories have appeared in our magazine and we love to have them," said Indie Comics Magazine Publisher Gary Scott Beatty. "Chuck's stark illustration style, with its expanses of black ink, looks gorgeous in Indie Comics Magazine's quality black and white format."

Infantryman is a Centurion cursed by an ancient wizard. "May you wander, beyond the touch of time, until evil walks the Earth no more." Currently protector of a major American city, Infantryman is not unapproachable by past evil, though separated by centuries.

"Another reason we like to see Kaso comics in Indie Comics Magazine is the company's variety of themes and characters," said Beatty. "Publisher, writer, editor and inker Anthony Cacioppo has released archaeological adventure The Risen and the Dead, suspense tale Twisted, creature of destruction The Indestructible Man, espionage thriller Matt Burton-Agent Zero and more."

Kaso art books include Heroic Fantasy: Paintings by Marcus Boas and the artist collection Pulp SF Pinups. Add to that Kaso's Action Anatomy artist sourcebook, posters, CDs, apparel and even Strathmore comic book layout pages and storyboard templates.

"Kaso's writers can deliver done-in-one stories, something I find lacking in most of the indie talent in the marketplace today," said Beatty. "As with all our stories, short biographies and contact information are included so readers can easily seek out more of the creators' work." Kaso products can be purchased at KasoComics.com.

The Legend Killer Debuts in Indie Comics Magazine's Spring Issue

Keith Frederick Robinson's new Legend Killer leaps into action, knives flying and silver bullets blazing, in Indie Comics Magazine's Spring Issue, scheduled for preorder in Diamond's April 2012 Previews under Aazurn Publishing.

Robinson will debut The Legend Killer May 25 through 27 at Traverse City, Michigan's Cherry Capital Con and online digitally, with the help of Jethro Morales, Tyler Sowles, MaGnUs and Nick Caldwell, but Indie Comics Magazine will be the first in-print appearance of the new character.

The Legend Killer was always intended for straight forward action adventure stories, Robinson explained. "I never wanted a complex plot to lose focus of the goal. He kills and he never talks, which gives the artists a real chance to shine."

That artist, Jethro Morales, developed his drawings skills on cartoon animation in various studios in the Philippines, on animated films such as Curious George, The Little Mermaid, One Piece, Monster Allergy and many more. Through storyboard work he explored camera angles and layout procedures. Comic books with several indie companies lead to Morales' work with Image Comics.

Morales' stark shadows work beautifully in Indie Comics Magazine's quality black and white format, forming a fluidity and grittiness Robinson intended for The Legend Killer. "I wanted to create a character that not only kills vampires and werewolves, but also big foot, leprechauns, gargoyles, chupacabra -- any creature that's from an urban legend needs to fear this character."

Arcana Studios picked up the rights to Robinson's Modern Hood in 2009. "The idea for that really came from a girl. She told me her favorite film was the Kevin Coster's Robin Hood. When I want to impress a girl, I write a story for her. This one got picked up, though!" The original graphic novel is in development.

"I really wanted to tell a Robin Hood story set in a modern world and grounded, somewhat, in reality. Because it has a clear superhero feel the task was to separate it from Green Arrow and Hawkeye. He'll never fight supervillians and he'll remain an urban legend fighting for the small guys and terrifying the poor."

In 2011 he self published Growing Pains under the 11/88 Studios banner, a story about a son’s journey for justice. "It was planned as three different self contained stories with different art teams," laughed Robinson. "It's now one story instead of three, but you can still see three chapters from three teams."

"The Legend Killer works really well in our format of done-in-one stories," said Indie Comics Magazine Publisher Gary Scott Beatty. "As with all our stories, short biographies and contact information are included so readers can easily seek out more of the creators' work." Keith Frederick Robinson can be followed at 11-88-studios.blogspot.com and facebook.com/1188Studios.

Gary Scott Beatty's "Jazz: The Tiki Room" Story Now in Free Online Magazine

Xeric winner Gary Scott Beatty's "Jazz: The Tiki Room" story is featured in the free online magazine MuskegonOnline.NET this month only.

The story, in a modernist retro style, follows jazz pianist Dean Fontessa as he pulls together -- then splits apart -- a five piece combo for a club recently decorated in that happening, new style called tiki. Spin a Miles vinyl and enjoy, dig?

MuskegonOnline.NET
Find the story at the bottom left under the "Fiction" heading. Click on "Jazz: The Tiki Room, written and illustrated by Gary Scott Beatty," click past the ad ("Advertisement. Click here to continue to the article.") and you're there.

Gary Scott Beatty is editor and publisher of Indie Comics Magazine, 64 pages of the best story and art from today's independent comic book creators. His "Jazz: Cool Birth," a murder mystery in a 1957 jazz club with art and typography based on '50s album cover design, earned him a Xeric Foundation Grant. He colors, letters and produces comic books and magazines for a diverse range of companies and has written for Comic Buyer's Guide.

"Through study of album cover design, television program title artwork, and common illustrations used in everything from health booklets to instruction manuals from the ’50s, I attempted to pull readers into the late night jazz clubs of 1957, feeling the music through the visuals," said Beatty.

"Ignoring paint and ink magazine illustration, a left over style from previous decades, I concentrate on the combination of flat and painterly used by artists working with T-squares and triangles, tracing paper, ruling pens and brush, preparing work for rotary letterpresses and similar hands-on intensive printing methods."

Beatty and dozens of other indie comic book creators can be contacted through Indie Comics Magazine.com.
