The Legend Killer Debuts in Indie Comics Magazine's Spring Issue

Keith Frederick Robinson's new Legend Killer leaps into action, knives flying and silver bullets blazing, in Indie Comics Magazine's Spring Issue, scheduled for preorder in Diamond's April 2012 Previews under Aazurn Publishing.

Robinson will debut The Legend Killer May 25 through 27 at Traverse City, Michigan's Cherry Capital Con and online digitally, with the help of Jethro Morales, Tyler Sowles, MaGnUs and Nick Caldwell, but Indie Comics Magazine will be the first in-print appearance of the new character.

The Legend Killer was always intended for straight forward action adventure stories, Robinson explained. "I never wanted a complex plot to lose focus of the goal. He kills and he never talks, which gives the artists a real chance to shine."

That artist, Jethro Morales, developed his drawings skills on cartoon animation in various studios in the Philippines, on animated films such as Curious George, The Little Mermaid, One Piece, Monster Allergy and many more. Through storyboard work he explored camera angles and layout procedures. Comic books with several indie companies lead to Morales' work with Image Comics.

Morales' stark shadows work beautifully in Indie Comics Magazine's quality black and white format, forming a fluidity and grittiness Robinson intended for The Legend Killer. "I wanted to create a character that not only kills vampires and werewolves, but also big foot, leprechauns, gargoyles, chupacabra -- any creature that's from an urban legend needs to fear this character."

Arcana Studios picked up the rights to Robinson's Modern Hood in 2009. "The idea for that really came from a girl. She told me her favorite film was the Kevin Coster's Robin Hood. When I want to impress a girl, I write a story for her. This one got picked up, though!" The original graphic novel is in development.

"I really wanted to tell a Robin Hood story set in a modern world and grounded, somewhat, in reality. Because it has a clear superhero feel the task was to separate it from Green Arrow and Hawkeye. He'll never fight supervillians and he'll remain an urban legend fighting for the small guys and terrifying the poor."

In 2011 he self published Growing Pains under the 11/88 Studios banner, a story about a son’s journey for justice. "It was planned as three different self contained stories with different art teams," laughed Robinson. "It's now one story instead of three, but you can still see three chapters from three teams."

The 3 Geeks launched Koslowski's career and has been a constant in his years in the business of comics. Since the How To Pick Up Girls If You’re A Comic Book Geek one-shot was published in 1997, The 3 Geeks have appeared in 25 comics and four trade paperbacks.

Koslowski won an Ignatz Award for “Best Graphic Novel” in 2001 for Three Fingers, a dark comedy in documentary style about cartoon actors in the '30s and '40s and the barriers they faced in a prejudicial Hollywood. In 2005 Koslowski released The King, his take on the Elvis Presley phenomenon. His BB Wolf and the Three LPs hardcover was released last year with a blues CD. Golden Age Legend Bellman Appears in Indie Comics Magazine #3

A story by Golden Age legend Allen Bellman, who worked on Captain America in 1942, will appear in Indie Comics Magazine #3, announced Editor Gary Scott Beatty. Indie Comics Magazine #3 is scheduled for preorder in Diamond Comic Distributors' August 2011 Previews catalog and available ONLY through Previews.

Bellman became a staff artist at Timely and, while still a teenager, drew backgrounds for Syd Shores' Captain America in 1942. He later worked on The Patriot, The Destroyer, The Human Torch, Jap Buster Johnson and Jet Dixon of the Space Squadron, All Winners Comics, Marvel Mystery, Sub Mariner Comics, Young Allies and many more.

Let's Play Detective was Bellman's comic book creation. He also contributed to Atlas pre-Code horror, crime, war and western titles.

In the '50s Bellman moved to work for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. He is also a photographer whose work has appeared on hundreds of books and in museum exhibits. He can still be seen at conventions and still accepts commissions. In 2007 he received the Inkpot Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Comic Arts at the San Diego Comic-Con International.

Blair owns and operates Possum Press, which publishes The Possum, a character that originated as doodles in Blair's 10th grade sketchbook. He and a friend "were attempting to come up with the lamest super hero that we could." The Possum has no super strength or special abilities, other than the fact that he has no vital signs. After a beating, he simply plays dead. "Ten years later, I discovered my old sketchbook, and when I saw the picture, it made me laugh," said Blair.

Blair honed his art skills working as a traditional animator and storyboard artist in Toronto, Canada. He has directed commercials, animated on commercials and features, drawn boards for TV, and even spent a time supervising in the Phillipines.

Mike Kitchen is the creator of Spy Guy, a hard-boiled funny book telling the story of an undercover Toronto city cop. Published through Ultraist Studios, the initial series of Spy Guy one-shot comics consisted of Spy Guy: Bootleg, Spy Guy: Minis and Spud & Harry #1. In the summer of 2009, Mike released Spy Guy #1 (of the Unlimited Series) which also launched as a part of Indy Comic Book Week 2009.

Gary Scott Beatty has been producing comic books since the underground days of the 1970s. Now an 8 page story from his Jazz series will appear in the new Indie Comics Magazine, scheduled for preorder in Diamond Comic Distributors' January 2011 Previews catalog and available only through Previews. The done-in-one tale features Beatty's cool jazz pianist Dean Fontessa from his Xeric grant winning book Jazz: Cool Birth.

"After years of working in a grunge style, I'm now fascinated by the flat, design oriented jazz albums of the 1950s," said Beatty. His Jazz: Cool Birth, a murder mystery in a 1957 jazz club with art and typography based on '50s album cover design, earned him a Xeric Foundation Grant in 2008.

The first alternative comic Beatty produced (They were called "underground" then) was on his high school's ditto machine, after hours, without permission. He colors, letters and produces comic books and magazines for a diverse range of companies and has written for Comic Buyer's Guide.

Beatty studies album cover design, television program title artwork, and common illustrations used in everything from health booklets to instruction manuals from the '50s to develop a style unique to the new millennium. "I swear it's harder to illustrate in this style," he explained. "When you're drawing realistically, you have real objects to look at to let you know when it's right. With my design-oriented style, there's nothing in reality for reference. It just has to feel balanced, slick and communicate the right mood."

The artist's tools are modern and digital, but the process of pushing things around on the page remains the same as 1957, said Beatty. "Artists used to work with T-squares and triangles, tracing paper, ruling pens and brush, preparing work for rotary letterpresses and similar hands-on intensive printing methods. That's where the style developed."
